Meet the founder

Hi, I'm Asha

Asha Starks, founder of Hot Grease, smiling at the fish fry stand

I'm Asha Starks, founder of Hot Grease.

I grew up in Southern California, but some of my earliest food memories came from visiting family in Georgia. Fish fries weren't restaurant meals. They were where everybody showed up. Family, neighbors, music, folding chairs, stories, and enough food to feed whoever pulled into the driveway.

When I came back to California as an adult, I realized something was missing. We had fish & chips. We had seafood. We had fried fish. But we didn't have fish fry culture.

That's why I started Hot Grease.

We're not recreating nostalgia. We're continuing a tradition. Southern fish fry is its own thing, and best wrapped in white bread and doused in hot sauce. At least that's how I like it.

Hot Grease exists to preserve Black Southern foodways while introducing more people to them. Today that looks like pop-ups, catering, and community experiences. Tomorrow it looks like products in grocery stores, restaurants, and bringing fish fry culture to cities across the country.

Good food fills you up, and so does good company.
